Malava youths handed chance to display talents as Shilunji launches tourney

Residents of Malava Constituency are set to be treated to a month long of various sporting activities to keep the youth busy and safe from drug and substance abuse.

The patron of the Abashu sub clan, Nelson Shilunji, has crafted a December sporting calendrer that will keep the youth, mostly students, fully engaged where they will explore their different talents that will expose them to more privileges in the sporting world.

Addressing the public during the Nelson Shilunji Sports tournament recently, Shilunji, through his representative Daniel Shitanda, stated that it was high time the young generation given the right direction in life especially during this December holiday.

“As the patron of Abashu clan, ne of the largest in Malava, we felt it is wise to keep our boys and girls safe through introducing sports that will see them compete against each other and winners awarded, this is to encourage them embrace sports as one way of earning is the future as white-collar jobs continue to become scarce day by day,” he stated.

“During this festive season learners are at high risk of being lured into irresponsible behaviour due to peer pressure and many end up regretting as the fall prey to all sorts of bad things and we are trying to cushion them against such negative vices through sports,” he added.

The second edition event which was launched at Mahira Secondary School in South Kabras Ward brought together ward teams which will battle it out in various sporting activities including tug-of-war, bull fighting, soccer for both boys and girls with its finals being held on January 1, 2025 where the winners would be awarded with trophies, cash and other goodies.

According to Shilunji, sports is not only an equalizer but a key tool to help the youth realise and explore their talents and eventually expose them to better opportunities.

He at the same time underscored the importance of keeping the youths in learning institutions as one way of empowering them.

“It is only through education that we can develop and bring the desired change in our community and constituency as well and that is why I take education fund seriously hence having launched an education fund to assist the vulnerable learners from this community on top of what the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) issues to needy students and we will continue to push for the enlightenment of our learners until we have a society of elites who can come together and transform our society to prosperity,” he added.
