Speaker Wetang’ula hails Kenyans in Guernsey for transforming livelihoods

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, has commended the industrious Kenyan diaspora in Guernsey, Channel Islands, for their contributions to community development and for upholding Kenya’s image on the global stage.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Standing Committee (CSPOC) meeting, Speaker Wetang’ula met with Kenyan community leaders, praising their resilience in integrating into Guernsey’s socio-economic framework while maintaining strong ties to their homeland.

“It is inspiring to see a vibrant Kenyan community of over 500 individuals thriving in Guernsey’s dynamic economy,” said the Speaker. “Your significant contributions to key sectors like finance, hospitality, and education exemplify the industrious spirit of Kenyans.”

Hon. Wetang’ula underscored the Kenyan Government’s commitment to leveraging the potential of its diaspora for economic and national growth. He highlighted his instrumental role in elevating diaspora issues during his tenure as Minister for Foreign Affairs, framing them as a cornerstone of Kenya’s foreign policy.

Ms. Catherine Wanyoike, Chairperson of the Kenyan Community in Guernsey, expressed gratitude for the Speaker’s engagement, sharing the community’s achievements while advocating for support on long-stay visas to enhance their contributions.

The Speaker assured the community that their concerns would be addressed through structured collaboration with Kenya’s Mission in London. Amb. Catherine Karemu, Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK, reiterated her office’s readiness to facilitate solutions to the challenges faced by the diaspora.

This engagement underscores Kenya’s commitment to fostering diaspora relations and recognizing their role in advancing national goals while enhancing the country’s global standing.
