Barasa pledges support for Kakamega groups

The County Government of Kakamega has pledged to support organized women and youth groups in the area through grants and trainings.

Area Governor Fernandes Barasa said this will unlock the locals’ potential and build a self-reliant economy across the county.

“My administration will support organized groups in all the 60 wards,” he stated.

He said this yesterday after commissioning a Shs 17 Million modern poultry hatchery at Eshirembe in Marama Central Ward, Butere Sub-county.

Accompanying him were Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture Mophat Mandela, Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KELCOP) County Coordinator Frandina Mwachenu and host Members of the County Assembly and Majority Leader Philip Maina.

The Governor said the hatchery is a key milestone by his administration in supporting agribusiness, especially for the youth and women groups, as part of his economic empowerment agenda.

The solar-powered facility currently produces 2,500 chicks per month and is expected to increase the capacity to 10,000 chicks every 21 days, creating jobs and also helping farmers access affordable, quality chicks.

He said his government will establish similar hatcheries in all the 12 sub-counties of Kakamega. He urged farmers, especially young people, to embrace poultry farming as a dependable source of income.

Governor Barasa also highlighted other key projects in the County, including the Aggregation and Industrial Park in Likuyani, the recently commissioned Lugari Maize Milling Plant, Matawa Fertilizer Plant in Mumias West, the upcoming Kenya Gold Refinery in Ikolomani, and the Madala Tea Factory.

He said such investments are essential for creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and improving livelihoods.
