Take charge of your girls, Mama County Elsie Muhanda tells Kakamega parents

Kakamega Woman Rep Elsie Muhanda, popularly known as Mama County, has called on parents to monitor their children’s movement as the April holidays kick-off.
Her rallying call is aimed at ensuring that there are minimal cases of early pregnancies and other irresponsible sexual behaviour among learners.
Muhanda, who is sponsoring young mothers to go back to school, warned parents against letting their children to roam unchecked some in the guise of visiting relatives without proper arrangements.
Such activities, she said, are the loopholes that see girls get pregnant even by some of their relatives, friends, or unknown people making them young mothers and interrupting their education.
“Through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) we have rescued over 600 young mothers and taken them back to school out of which 35 are graduates and as we grapple with his issue of teen pregnancies within the county, let our parents be on the forefront in assisting to instill discipline in our teenage girls,” she said.
“Let them assist you with home chores instead of setting them free and allowing them to roam the whole holiday only for them to get back to school pregnant with many not even knowing who was responsible,” she cautioned.

She pointed out that the county was among the leading in teen pregnancies and observed that good moral upbringing was the only solution to end the vice.
At the same time, she called on all the teen mothers who are still interested to get education to reach out through her ward representatives noting that women empowerment could only be realized by sending as many girls to school as possible.
“My initiative to take young mothers to school has so far been a success story as we have seen and heard living testimonies from the girls themselves on how beneficial returning to class has been and we will continue to assist them get education and be able to support their young ones and families as well,” she noted.
