Mudavadi Unveils Nationwide Dam Rehabilitation Plan Ahead of El Niño Rains

The government will soon embark on the rehabilitation of colonial era dams a cross the country in a bid to increase water harvesting capacity.

According to Prime Cabinet Secretary (PCS) Musalia Mudavadi, the move will help curb impending flooding to be occassioned by the anticipated El Nino rains set to commence in October.

He said the rehabilitation of of the dams across the North Rift region including Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kakamega, Elgeyo Markwet and Trans Nzoia counties is in intervention by the state to curtail destruction associated with the impending rains.

Mudavadi said this on Friday when he paid a courtesy call to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii in his office in Eldoret town.

The PCS who is also the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary acknowledged the increasingly unpredictable climate patterns stressing the need to invest in water infrastructure that will include storage for domestic use and strengthen long-term climate resilience for farming communities.

He said farmers in the country were undergoing tough moments following delayed rains assuring of the government’s measures to cushion affected households.

“There are targeted interventions to ease the burden on farmers. We are also considering support mechanism such as relief on agriculture input financing,” he revealed.

Mudavadi observed supporting farmers will be essential to safeguarding food security and protect livelihoods.
