Mumias sugarcane farmers receive first-ever bonus payout

Farmers supplying Mumias Sugar Company with cane have today received their first-ever bonus payout, totalling KSh 150 million.

President William Ruto, speaking during the event in Mumias, announced the landmark payment and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the sugar sector.

He directed Mumias Sugar Company to prioritize timely payments to farmers and workers, promising that bonuses would now become an annual occurrence.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, who hosted the event, called on the national government to support sugarcane farmers further by providing subsidized farm inputs like fertilizers and seed

The Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya urged sugar millers to increase their investment in farmers by ensuring a steady supply of raw materials to sustain the industry. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the critical role of farmer empowerment in revitalizing the sector.
