Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi donates relief food to Dallas fire victims
In a heartfelt gesture of support, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has donated essential foodstuffs and bedding to families affected by a devastating fire that swept through Dallas Kangemi Ward on Tuesday, October 29.
The inferno, which originated from an electric coil, completely destroyed 31 houses, leaving dozens of families without homes or possessions.
The donation, presented at an event this morning in the compound where the fire took place, included maize flour, wheat flour, rice, cooking oil, blankets, and sugar.
The affected families, many of whom have been temporarily taken in by neighbours, lost all their belongings in the blaze, including clothing, documents, school uniforms, books, and household items.
Speaking on behalf of the MP, Esemele Moses, Kangemi Coordinator in the Office of Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, conveyed the MP’s heartfelt empathy.
“We are sorry for the tragedy that was unexpected, but we are together in this,” he said.
“Hon Tim is not around at the moment; he would have been here personally. He has given these donations to help sustain you a bit as you move forward.”
Kangemi MCA Hamisi Maleya, who has been actively assisting the victims, had earlier donated mattresses and provided breakfast for the affected families this morning.
During the event, he expressed his commitment to supporting them further.
“God loves us, and Hon Wanyonyi loves us too,” he said.
“It is challenging to start from scratch, especially with Christmas and the new school term approaching in January. As the area MCA, I will prioritize bursary allocations for the victims here to help them take their children back to school in January. Let’s work together in peace and unity.”
Sylvanus Okonya, a resident affected by the fire, expressed his gratitude to the MP and the MCA for their assistance. “Thank you to the MCA and Hon Tim for their help. This fire started from an electric coil, and despite efforts from neighbours, we couldn’t save anything. Tell Hon Tim we are thankful, and we hope he remembers us, as we have small children and many other needs.”
Margaret Muhadia, another victim of the fire, shared her ordeal. “The fire started in my house. I alerted others, and we tried to put it out, but we lost everything. Thankfully, I managed to save my children. Thank you for the support, and may you continue with this heart of helping.”
The landlord of the destroyed homes, Henry Ngan’ga Kinuthia, offered words of encouragement to the affected tenants, expressing hope that they would find a way to rebuild.
He thanked MP Tim Wanyonyi and Kangemi MCA Hamisi Maleya for their support, acknowledging the importance of their solidarity in difficult times.
Hon. Tim Wanyonyi has long advocated for the Nairobi City County government to decentralize fire stations and position a fire engine in Kangemi, citing the frequent fires that affect Kangemi and nearby Mt. View and Kitisuru wards.
The MP has emphasized the need for rapid response to protect lives and prevent significant losses in the area.
