Victory for cane farmers as Senator Wakoli moves crucial motion in Senate – VIDEO

Kenyan sugar cane farmers have a reason to smile following efforts being done to improve their livelihoods by Bungoma Senator David Wakoli.

On Tuesday, October 22, the senator told Mulembe News that: “This afternoon, I have moved a motion for the Senate to adopt the Report of the Mediation Committee on the Sugar Bill (National Assembly Bills No. 34 of 2022).”

At the same time, the Senator has revealed that a consensus over some contentious issues in the motion had been achieved between the Senate and National Assembly.

“This represents a significant victory for our sugarcane farmers across Western Kenya. The Bill’s provision for re-establishing the Sugar Board is a major win for our farmers, as is the establishment of a dedicated research institute,” said Wakoli.

With the legislation in place, issues like cane poaching would be addressed for once and conclusivly.

Cane poaching has been a practice that has hit the sector hard with major sugar firms involved being Mumias, West Kenya and Nzoia.

“Cane poaching, which has long plagued our sector, is another critical issue that this Sugar Bill effectively addresses,” Wakoli stated.
