1st year MMUST student wins 21km Standard Chartered race

Kibet, a first-year student at Masinde Muliro University, clinched victory in the 21km race at the Standard Chartered Marathon Kakamega satellite run.

The event served as a warm-up for the 21st Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, set for October 27, 2024, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

The Kakamega event attracted over 160 participants, featuring a 5km Family Fun Run and a 10km race, giving running enthusiasts unable to travel to Nairobi a chance to engage in the region’s largest single-day sporting event.

The event brought together fitness, competition, and community interaction.

The Kakamega race was the second of three satellite runs organised ahead of the main marathon. The first satellite event took place last weekend, where Vincent Ouma secured victory in the Men’s 10km race. The final satellite run will occur on October 21, 2024, in Mombasa.

The concept of satellite runs began during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the first virtual marathon allowing participants to compete from various locations due to restrictions on public gatherings.

“Interest from runners in Kisumu, Kakamega, and Mombasa has grown steadily over the years, inspiring us to continue hosting these mini-events. The addition of satellite races in these regions underscores our commitment to offering nationwide opportunities for everyone to join in this celebration of fitness and sport,” said Neema Gitau, Head of Brand and Marketing at Standard Chartered Kenya.

The 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has garnered support from over 40 sponsors, collectively raising KES 173 million.

To date, more than 24,900 runners have registered to participate. Proceeds from the marathon will support Futuremakers by Standard Chartered, which focuses on empowering young people—particularly women and those with disabilities—by equipping them with skills to learn, earn, and grow.

The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8, promoting sustained, inclusive economic growth, and decent work for all.

Since its inception, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has welcomed over 300,000 runners, solidifying its status as one of the region’s premier sporting events.

This year, Standard Chartered has invested KES 100 million in the marathon, which is expected to attract over 25,000 participants.

The event will feature various races, including the 42km full marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km, the popular 5km Family Fun Run, and specially designed races for individuals with disabilities.
