Scare, tension at St Mary’s Mumias Girls’ over unknown disease outbreak

A health scare has been reported at St Mary’s Mumias Girls’ High School in Mumias East sub-county of Kakamega County.

Over 20 students have been released to their parents to seek treatment from home.

Parents were called by one of the teachers to pick their children who were in a bad health state, and we have since established that while some are in stable condition, others needs serious medical attention.

Four of them, we established, had been taken to a Bungoma hospital while others were treated at the Kakamega Referral Hospital even as the management of the school remained silent on the issue.

“I received a call through 0710***0768 requesting me to go to school, and when I reached, I was handed a sick child without any explanation,” a distraught parent who sought anonymity told this publication.

He also confirmed that he met other parents at the institution who had also been called to pick their children.

Most of the students complained of stomach pain even as a doctor in one of the hospitals confirmed a bacterial infection and prescribed medication towards the same.

The parent of the girl confirmed his daughter was responding well to the treatment.

The administration has been asked to check on the food store as our source claimed that the students may be consuming contaminated food.

The administration had not responded on the issue by the time of publishing this story.
