Busia Governor leads distribution of assistive devices to PWDs, to be continuous
The County Government of Busia, under the leadership of Governor Paul Nyongesa Otuoma, on Tuesday, July 2, embarked on the distribution of assistive devices to people with disabilities in the County with Samia and Bunyala Sub counties being the first beneficiaries.
Through the Department of Sports, Culture, and Social Services in collaboration with the Health Department, the event saw the distribution of essential aids such as wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids, and white canes (blind sticks).
The Director of Culture and Social Services Mr Charles Wakhaya underscored the importance of the distribution of the devices for the financial year 2023-2024 adding that the initiative is not just a one-time effort but part of a continuous commitment that will extend into the coming years to ensure a more comfortable and dignified life for PWDs in Busia County.
“Our goal as a county government is not just to offer support but to empower PWDs to lead self-reliant and dignified lives. These tools are a testament to Busia County’s commitment to inclusivity and progress, allowing PWDs to navigate their communities and pursue their trades with increased ease and confidence,” remarked the Director.
While addressing the beneficiaries Ms. Irene Mito, the County Health Occupational Therapist noted that the program will reach all seven sub-counties in the coming days to ensure that every sub-county benefits from this Phase 1 program.
“We have brought different devices since every Person with Disability has a different need, aiming to significantly improve the lives of PWDs,” she added.
This distribution marks a pivotal step towards inclusivity, ensuring that every resident of Busia, regardless of their abilities, can participate fully in community development.
Present were Deputy Director of Culture and Social Services Antony Gumo, and county physiotherapist Mr. Patrick Obwana among other government officers.
