From bullfights to classrooms: Mulamula’s multifaceted approach to Malava community support

Parents of South Kabras ward in Kakamega North sub-county have every reason to smile after a young, upcoming philanthropist stepped forward to assist vulnerable learners.

The benefactor, Zacharia Mulamula, has taken over the education of over 50 learners from primary, secondary, and college levels, assisting with fee payment and other school necessities.

He also ensures that students have uniforms, with his latest gesture being at Mahira Primary, where he purchased new uniforms and foodstuffs for needy pupils. He later hosted a ceremony to integrate them with other learners.

His passion for education has extended to special needs units, where he has donated foodstuffs to Shamberere and Chombeli primary schools. He intends to spread this support to other schools with extreme needs.

Speaking to the press by phone during the Mahira bullfighting ceremony, Mulamula, a certified public accountant with extensive experience in audit and accounting, stated that he is giving back to society because he faced similar challenges growing up.

He believes in uplifting and giving hope to young people, showing them that education makes anything possible.

“We are committed to assisting where possible. The more resources available, the higher the number of beneficiaries we will support. As role models, we should portray good morals to inspire the next generation to assist others, and that is the spirit we should foster,” he said.

Mulamula expressed his desire to conserve the culture and heritage of their forefathers while creating a platform for the new generation to learn, identify with, and associate themselves with their community.

“We have been holding bullfighting events in various locations, with winners participating in the finals in December. In addition to our Mulamula tournament, we are nurturing talent in line with the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Given the challenging economic times and elusive employment opportunities, young people need to embrace sports as it is one of the highest-paying careers globally.”

Barnabas Makanga, Mulamula’s personal assistant, added that the Mulamula initiative also targets feeding widows with school-going children by distributing foodstuffs to their households. This ensures that the pupils have a meal in the evening and can wake up and go to school with a full stomach.

“Our benefactor has put in place a carefully structured timetable that we are diligently following to ensure the community and our immediate neighbours have something to smile about. We will continue implementing this plan to reach as many households as possible,” he said.
