PS Bonface Makokha launches Busia mass ID registration drive

State Department for Economic Planning Principal Secretary Bonface Makokha has launched a countywide mass registration exercise aimed at ensuring more Kenyans acquire National Identity Cards.

Makokha said registration documents are the gateway to essential government services, with the National Identity Card remaining a critical document for every Kenyan.

The PS spoke during the launch of the mass registration exercise in Nambale Sub-county, Busia County, where the initiative is being implemented jointly by National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) and the National Registration Bureau.

The exercise seeks to bring registration services closer to wananchi and ensure eligible Kenyans who do not have identification documents can obtain them.

Makokha also highlighted a number of government projects he said are transforming Busia County, including the Matayos-Nasewa-Shibale and Nangina-Sio Port-Mundere roads.

He cited the affordable housing projects in Nasewa, Busia ATC and Funyula, as well as the Sh1.3 billion Alupe University administration, lecture theatre and library complex.

The PS also pointed to eight school buses that have been provided to support schools across the county.
The mass ID registration drive is expected to benefit thousands of Kenyans ahead of the 2027 General Election by enabling those without identification documents to acquire them and subsequently register as voters.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has also been conducting Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) at designated and gazetted registration centers across the country.

The commission says the exercise is intended to facilitate eligible Kenyan citizens with national IDs and valid passports to register as voters.

IEBC has welcomed continued collaboration with stakeholders, saying it has contributed to the orderly and uninterrupted conduct of voter registration exercises across the country.
