Wamatsi Eyes Mumias East Seat, Pledges Development Through Ruto Ties

National Biosafety Authority Board of Directors Chairperson David Wamatsi has declared his intention to contest the Mumias East parliamentary seat, telling residents he is “ripe” and has the capacity to transform the constituency.

Speaking during a public sensitisation forum on Genetically Modified Organisms held at Shianda KMTC grounds on Saturday, Wamatsi urged voters to judge aspirants by their ability to deliver rather than party affiliation.

“I am capable of transforming this Constituency. When the time comes, I am here and elect me to work for you,” he told the crowd.

Wamatsi leaned heavily on his current national role, arguing that his position as NBA Board Chair gives him direct access to decision-makers and development resources. He said that advantage, combined with his working relationship with President William Ruto, would ensure Mumias East benefits from national government projects.

“According to Wamatsi, his relationship with President Ruto will bring more developments to the grassroots for everyone to benefit,” he stated. He further called on residents to back the President’s 2027 re-election bid, saying a second term would unlock more projects for the area.

The aspirant framed his campaign around service delivery and unity. He asked voters not to “vote for anyone because of the party” but to elect leaders with proven capacity to change lives. He also warned against divisive politics.

“Let us have unity and say no to politics of hate and tribalism. Let us unite and have leaders who care about people and not themselves,” Wamatsi urged.

His remarks come as political activity in Mumias East begins to gain momentum ahead of 2027. The constituency has remained a battleground, with issues like revival of the sugar sector, youth unemployment, and effective use of CDF funds dominating voter concerns.

By using a GMO sensitisation platform to launch his pitch, Wamatsi positioned himself as both a technocrat and a leader with national connections.
