Reprieve for Kakamega traders as county unveils new market
In line with Fernandes Barasa’s Wealth Creation Pillar, the County Government of Kakamega is putting the finishing touches on several modern markets aimed at boosting trade and creating a vibrant business environment.
According to Trade Chief Officer Faith Gotira, the Bungasi, Koyonzo, Shibinga, and Lidambitsa markets are currently between 65% and 95% complete, following the resumption of works. While Koyonzo and Shibinga markets had previously stalled, progress is now steady and on track.
The Chief officer said the contractor, Shiatsala, is expected back on-site next month after the project was held under EACC review from the previous regime saying once completed, the markets are expected to strengthen revenue collection, improve market infrastructure, and stimulate commercial activity across the county.

“As the county, we have done alot to make sure people of Kakamega are safe while doing their business, we have built many markets in less than four years”, Gitira said.
However, Gitira said several market sheds have already been completed, including-Bushiri Market, Manda Market,Samitsi Market and Khuqueen in Marama Central
Other ongoing market sheds include, Ikoli Marke, Shiasa Market and Chegulo Market where each market shed has been thoughtfully designed to provide a structured, secure, and hygienic trading space for both traders and customers.

Their operationalisation will particularly support small and medium-sized enterprises, fueling economic growth and expanding business opportunities.
All projects are on track for completion in the coming weeks, after which they will be officially commissioned. Residents and traders across Kakamega County can look forward to improved services and a new era of modern, vibrant marketplaces.
