Bungoma farmers back Rai in Nzoia sugar deal

Cane farmers from Bungoma County have strongly endorsed the leasing of Nzoia Sugar Company to West Kenya Sugar Company, owned by renowned business mogul Jaswant Rai, signaling a new chapter of hope and stability for the long-troubled miller.

Led by Godfrey Wambulwa, the farmers addressed the press on Monday, expressing optimism that the takeover will revitalize operations at Nzoia Sugar, which has suffered years of financial mismanagement, delayed payments, and stalled growth.

“For too long, we’ve been in distress, surviving without payments or support. This handover to West Kenya Sugar is a breath of fresh air—an opportunity for progress,” said Wambulwa.

The farmers praised West Kenya Sugar’s reputation for timely payments and professional management, contrasting it with the years of hardship under previous leadership. They believe the Rai-led takeover will restore confidence among growers and bring long-overdue development to the region.

In a strongly worded statement, the farmers criticized a section of local politicians, including Majimbo Kalasinga, Jack Wamboka, and John Makali, accusing them of attempting to sabotage the transition for personal political gain. They claimed these leaders had shown little concern during Nzoia’s decline but are now opposing change to maintain their influence.

“These politicians were silent through our suffering. Now they want to block progress without offering any real solutions,” the statement read.

The farmers urged all stakeholders—government agencies, media, and the public—to resist misinformation and support the transition. They emphasized that the new management promises timely payments, job opportunities for youth, and a more prosperous future.

“This is not a time for chaos; it’s a time for unity, renewal, and a brighter tomorrow,” Wambulwa concluded.
