Shamoni Secondary Principal in the soup over food poisoning

Parents and education stakeholders of Friends School Shamoni in Malava subcounty of Kakamega are up in arms against the school principal Samuel Kakai accusing him of negligence after a suspected food poisoning incident at the institution that forced students to be sent home to seek treatment.

Led by Tom Mwanje, the parents who stormed the school to be told what transpired now want Kakai immediately transferred by the ministry failure to which they will forceful eject him from the institution saying he put the lives of the students at risk by failing to rush them to hospital and instead chose to let them go home without caring what would happen to them later.

The alleged food poisoning happened during an annual general meeting where parents and students fell ill after consuming meat from a cow that slaughtered at the school two days before the event was held and was kept in a freezer.

It is not clear whether the meat was contaminated or it was from a sick animal, as we could not establish if a veterinary officer was called to give it a clean bill before cooking it for human consumption.

Most students complained of stomach pains while some experienced diarhoea and vomiting symptoms.

Parents who ate the meal at the school also reported the same symptoms seeking medication from facilities around with a doctor who attended to some of them confirming food poisoning.

The principal on his part confirmed students complaining of stomachache and headache before he allowed them to go home to seek medical attention.

However, he maintained that the food was not poisoned as alleged as only a few cases were reported against the high number of those who were served with the same.
