Address increasing road accidents now, Governor Barasa tells Chirchir

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has urged the Ministry of Transport to reinforce road safety measures to address the rising cases of road accidents.

Speaking on November 14 at Kakamega Level 5 Hospital after visiting survivors of a tragic accident that claimed 13 lives, Barasa expressed his concern over laxity in safety enforcement on major roads.

He highlighted preliminary reports from the traffic department, which revealed that the tanker involved in the accident was unroadworthy.

Additionally, the two passenger vans that the tanker collided with were reportedly speeding, indicating a dangerous disregard for traffic regulations.

Calling for immediate action, Barasa appealed to traffic police to reintroduce roadblocks along key routes to monitor and control vehicles that violate traffic laws.

He emphasised that both enforcement and driver responsibility are critical, especially during the upcoming festive season when road travel is expected to increase.

“Drivers must also exercise caution and adhere to road regulations to protect lives. We can not afford to lose more lives to preventable road accidents,” he stated.

The governor thereafter visited the accident victims at Iguhu level 4 hospital, where he also wished them quick recovery.
