Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi leads Githogoro residents in protecting public land
In a show of solidarity with Githogoro residents, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi joined thousands in Karura Ward to protest against an alleged land grab.
The disputed land, approximately 29 acres in Githogoro adjacent to Kiambu Road, has been subject to illegal encroachment, with private individuals recently attempting to erect a perimeter wall.
The residents, united in their resolve, tore down the wall to reclaim what they assert is public property.
During the gathering, Hon. Tim Wanyonyi addressed the crowd, condemning the actions of individuals attempting to privatize the land for personal gain.
He emphasized the need for the land to be allocated for public facilities, including a secondary school, a market, and recreational spaces—amenities that are notably absent in Githogoro.
“We have private individuals who are planning to grab this public land in Githogoro next to Kiambu Road for their personal benefit,” said Hon. Wanyonyi.
“As residents of this area, we shall not allow it. We have confirmed that this is not private property; it is public land. We want the government to approve the use of this land for public facilities development.”
Wanyonyi expressed his commitment to securing funding through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to support the development of essential facilities for Githogoro residents.
He pledged to work with the National Land Commission and bring in surveyors to ensure the land is formally designated for public use, mentioning that he would take the matter up with relevant authorities and even the President if necessary.
Village Elder Mr. Wamalwa recounted the history of the land, stating that some individuals had attempted to subdivide it illegally.
He pointed out that residents have resisted these attempts, and Hon. Wanyonyi’s support adds strength to their cause.
Diqa Wario, a local resident, explained the land’s significance, sharing that it was initially intended for a bypass that was later rerouted for safety reasons, leaving the land vacant and in government ownership.
“This land was meant for the bypass, but it was diverted due to safety concerns. The space has remained public, yet some wealthy individuals have tried to creep in and claim it,” said Wario.
“As citizens, we say NO. Public land should remain public, and we refuse completely.”
The Githogoro community’s call for a social hall, sports field, and secondary school underscores the pressing need for public infrastructure in the area.
In a powerful statement, Hon. Wanyonyi concluded, “We are putting these land grabbers on notice. As members of the public, we are going to protect our Constitution. Property like this belongs to the people, and you have to stand firm. I am with you in this fight, and I assure you, my voice will be heard.”
