Kenya congratulates Sierra Leone on United Nations Security Council election success
Kenya has congratulated Sierra Leone on its recent election to the United Nations Security Council as a Non-Permanent Member for the 2024-2025 term, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for the West African nation.
In a statement issued by Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi on September 30, the government lauded Sierra Leone’s commitment to global peace and security, commending its leadership role in advocating for the reform of the UN Security Council through its position as Chair of the African Union Committee of 10 (C-10).
The statement also highlights the efforts of H.E. Ms. Isatu Aminata Bundu, the outgoing High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to Kenya, who has played a key role in strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
“I am pleased to acknowledge the enduring and cordial relations between Kenya and Sierra Leone, a partnership built on mutual respect, shared values, and historical solidarity,” said Mudavadi.
Furthermore, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, made the official pronouncement on behalf of the Kenyan government, reflecting the close diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
Mudavadi also highlighted the strong diplomatic relations between Kenya and Sierra Leone, noting that these ties are built on mutual respect, shared values, and historical solidarity. He specifically commended Sierra Leone for facilitating the successful State Visit of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio to Kenya, a visit that marked a major milestone in the bilateral relationship.
“I particularly commend your pivotal role in facilitating the highly successful State Visit of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio to Kenya. This visit was a significant milestone in our bilateral relations, resulting in the signing of key Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding. These include important frameworks for Political and Diplomatic Consultations, Trade and Investments, Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, Wildlife Conservation and Tourism Development, as well as Culture, Arts, and Youth Affairs,” noted Mudavadi.
The UN Security Council, one of the most powerful bodies within the United Nations, plays a crucial role in maintaining global peace and security. Being elected to serve on the council is a major diplomatic achievement, reflecting a country’s international standing and ability to contribute to global governance.
Kenya, in its congratulatory message, praised Sierra Leone’s election as a testament to its commitment to global peace efforts.
Sierra Leone’s leadership in spearheading the reform of the UN Security Council, particularly as the current Chair of the African Union Committee of 10 (C-10), was also acknowledged. The C-10 is responsible for advancing Africa’s common position on UN Security Council reform, which aims to increase African representation on the council. This commitment aligns with the continent’s broader goals of ensuring that its voice is heard in global decision-making.
Kenya’s support for Sierra Leone’s election underscores the importance of African solidarity on the global stage. Both nations share a commitment to advocating for reform within the UN Security Council, particularly to increase Africa’s representation and ensure its interests are reflected in global governance structures.
