Prime Cabinet Secretary and acting Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Musalia Mudavadi, has underscored the importance of youth empowerment through sports, calling on all stakeholders to unite in building a brighter future for the nation’s young population.
Speaking at the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Gala at Safari Park Hotel, Mudavadi highlighted the role of sports, particularly football, in fostering youth development and socio-economic prosperity.
Mudavadi acknowledged the challenging journey that FKF has gone through to transform football. “Building sports and particularly soccer is not easy. What you have achieved is tremendous,” he said.
He emphasized the significant increase government resources for football clubs and promised continued support to enhance opportunities for youth employment and economic growth. FKF Premier League clubs and match officials have benefited from grants, which have been crucial in sustaining their active participation in various leagues, he noted.
Reflecting on recent events, Mudavadi highlighted the youth’s desire for actionable and fast-paced implementation of policies that benefit them. “Demographically, 70% of our population is under 35 years. We must reset ourselves and start looking at how we direct more resources in an impactful way to improving the lot of our young people,” he stressed.
Mudavadi recognized the efforts of Ababu Namwamba, the former Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, who played a crucial role in resolving FIFA’s ban on Kenya from international football.
“Ababu Namwamba was at the center of negotiations with the leadership of FKF to have the ban lifted. He was vocal in communicating matters relating to sports and other aspects of the economy, and I can confidently say that his talent is still needed in this country,” he remarked.
Highlighting the importance of sports in socio-economic development, Dr. Mudavadi noted: “Our youth develop their talents, earn decent incomes from participating in sports, and enjoy great social moments together.”
Looking ahead, Mudavadi applauded FKF for securing Kenya’s upcoming role as a co-host for two major tournaments: the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027 and the African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for early next year. “These milestones underscore our commitment to elevating the status of football in the Eastern Africa region and globally,” he said.
To prepare for these tournaments, the Government has embarked on an ambitious project to renovate and construct state-of-the-art stadia nationwide. Notably, this includes the first-ever stadium dedicated solely to football and rugby, symbolizing Kenya’s dedication to providing world-class facilities for its athletes.
Mudavadi also celebrated the historic achievement of the Kenyan under-17 Women’s National Team that has qualified for the FIFA World Cup in October in the Dominican Republic. “Their success is a beacon of hope and demonstrates what we can achieve with the right support and determination,” he remarked.
Mudavadi concluded his remarks by appreciating FKF, partners, and stakeholders for organizing the Gala and congratulated those who were recognized for their sterling performance. “Together, we can build a brighter future for Kenyan football, one that inspires and unites us all,” he said.
Mudavadi pledged to more actively attend football games and to continue supporting the growth of the sport.
The Gala was attended by prominent figures in Kenyan football fraternity including FKF President Nick Mwendwa, FKF Vice President, executives, members, stakeholders, partners, coaches, players, legends, and fans.
