Lusaka visits Malaha accident survivors, waives medical bills
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka on Wednesday announced a full waiver of medical bills for survivors of the fatal Malaha Junction road accident that claimed at least 15 lives earlier this week along the Webuye–Kitale Highway.
The governor made the announcement while visiting the injured victims admitted at Webuye County Hospital, while in the company of the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and several county leaders.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Lusaka said the county government had taken the step to cushion the victims and their families from the financial burden of medical care following the tragic incident.
“As a county government, we have waived all the hospital bills for the survivors currently receiving treatment here at Webuye County Hospital. We will also support those who may require specialized treatment in other facilities,” Lusaka said.
The leaders toured various wards at the facility, where they interacted with the injured and offered words of encouragement to the victims and their families.
Governor Lusaka further revealed that the county government is strengthening emergency healthcare services at the hospital to improve response to critical incidents.
“We are in the process of acquiring a CT scan machine and other emergency medical equipment to enhance our capacity to handle serious cases. In addition, we plan to establish a dedicated emergency area for patients requiring urgent care,” he added.
He also noted that construction of a modern outpatient complex at the hospital is ongoing and is expected to ease congestion at the facility once completed.
The visit by the leaders was aimed at expressing solidarity with the victims and their families following the tragic accident at Malaha Junction, which remains a known road safety black spot along the busy highway.
