Sofapaka strike gold in Waswa Cup as two Sportiff stars earn KPL call-up

By porcupine Isaac.

The Joseph Waswa Football Tournament has stamped its authority as a serious talent factory after Sofapaka FC snapped up two Webuye Sportiff players following standout performances in Sunday’s semi-finals at Misikhu Secondary School.

Joseph Masinde and Sammy Mwalema have been invited to join Sofapaka’s training camp from 28th this month, putting the duo on the brink of a Kenyan Premier League breakthrough.

“This tournament gave us the perfect scouting ground,” said Sofapaka coach Ezekiel Akwana. “Masinde, a defender, and Mwalema, a striker, showed discipline, maturity and hunger. That’s Premier League quality.”

Akwana hailed the tournament’s organisation, saying the competitive tempo allowed players to express themselves freely.

“Credit to the sponsor for creating a real platform for talent exposure,” he added.

The semi-finals drew a packed crowd as Kiyoro FC edged Webuye Sportiff on penalties after a goalless draw, while Namawanga FC beat Sitikho FC 1–0 to book a place in the final.

Despite their exit, Webuye Sportiff left with their heads high as their two stars caught top-flight attention.
Tournament sponsor Joseph Waswa, who watched the matches, said the competition was delivering on its promise.

“This is about opening doors for young players. Seeing Premier League scouts here proves the impact of grassroots football,” said Waswa.

The winner will pocket KSh 500,000 when Kiyoro FC face Namawanga FC in the final.

Webuye Sportiff CEO Mike Berra termed the development a major boost for the club.

“This is a blessing for our team. It confirms that talent nurtured at the grassroots can reach the very top,” said Berra.

Once again, the Joseph Waswa Tournament has shown it is more than just football — it is a launchpad to the big stage.
