No green, no deal: Mudavadi outlines Kenya’s strict terms for mining

Kenya is ready to partner with reputable mining firms to mine the country’s rare minerals.

According to Prime Cabinet Secretary (PCS) Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya will only engage investors with requisite expertise and financial strength to work on the country’s mineral ores and at the same time unlock their full national value.

“With significant rare earth deposits in this coastal region, Kenya is determined to work only with environmentally conscious companies that go beyond profit, adopt global best practices, and ensure full land restoration once mining activities conclude,” Mudavadi noted.

The PCS said this on Wednesday during a meeting with Australian Ambassador to the USA Kevin Rudd at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC.

Ambassador Rudd is the former Australian Prime Minister and also former Foreign Minister.

Mudavadi who is also the Foreign Affairs Minister said Kenya is committed to working with mining firms that will support and train local miners on safer ways of extracting the resources.

“They are supposed to be sustainable and at the same time be able to uplift the livelihoods of local communities,” he stressed.

He said Kenya is determined to work only with environmentally conscious companies that does not focus on making profit but be also able to adopt global based practices of mineral extraction.
