A new dawn in Busia: Okame TVC hits major milestone with 1st graduation ceremony

Okame Technical and Vocational College held its first-ever graduation, a milestone that signals the institution’s growing role in empowering youth with practical, job-ready skills.

The event brought together graduands, parents, education stakeholders, and local leaders who witnessed the institution’s remarkable transformation since Senior Principal Charles Marumbu took over in 2022.

Under his visionary leadership, Okame TVC has evolved from a fledgling institution into a dynamic centre of technical excellence, offering courses that equip students with the skills needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

“This first graduation is a proud moment for our college,” Marumbu said, addressing the audience. “It reflects the hard work of our trainers, the determination of our students, and our mission to empower young people with practical skills that can drive employment, entrepreneurship, and personal growth.”

Board of Governors chairperson Dr. David Ojakaa hailed Marumbu as a catalyst for change. “Since assuming leadership in 2022, Principal Marumbu has transformed Okame TVC.

Through his strategic direction, commitment to quality training, and focus on industry-relevant skills, he has positioned the college for growth and excellence,” Dr. Ojakaa said.

Graduates were awarded certificates in a variety of disciplines, including electrical engineering, building technology, ICT, mechanical trades, food and beverage production, hairdressing, and beauty therapy.

Many of the graduands expressed optimism about their futures, highlighting the hands-on training they received as critical preparation for both employment and entrepreneurship.

Community leaders attending the ceremony commended the college for expanding access to technical education in Busia County and providing youth with practical pathways to economic empowerment.

Since 2022, Principal Marumbu has overseen significant improvements at the institution, including modernizing training facilities, introducing new market-driven courses, and strengthening partnerships with industry players. These initiatives have not only enhanced the quality of education but also boosted the college’s reputation as a hub of competence-based learning.

Looking ahead, Marumbu announced plans to further expand infrastructure, diversify course offerings, and deepen linkages with the private sector, ensuring students continue to receive training that is aligned with industry demands.

With its first graduation now successfully concluded, Okame Technical and Vocational College stands out as a rising beacon in the TVET landscape—empowering the next generation with the technical skills that will shape Busia’s future and beyond.
