Raila Amolo Odinga: Kenya’s political giant now eyeing Africa’s top job

Raila Amolo Odinga is one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. For over four decades, he has been at the heart of Kenya’s political landscape, advocating for democracy, electoral justice, and governance reforms.

Now, he is setting his sights on the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship, a position that will place him at the helm of Africa’s political and economic affairs.

His journey from a young engineer in East Germany to a political powerhouse in Kenya is a story of resilience, ambition, and determination.

Raila Amolo Odinga was born on January 7, 1945, in Maseno, Siaya County, Kenya. He was raised in a politically active family, being the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President and a key figure in the country’s struggle for independence, and Mary Juma Odinga, a strong matriarch who played a significant role in shaping his early years.

For his early education, Raila attended Kisumu Union Primary School before proceeding to Maranda High School, one of Kenya’s most prestigious institutions.

In 1962, he traveled to East Germany, where he joined the Herder Institution before enrolling at the Technical School, Magdeburg, a branch of the University of Leipzig.

He pursued mechanical engineering and graduated in 1970 with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

His exposure to international politics while in Germany broadened his worldview, shaping his beliefs in democracy, governance, and economic development.

The socialist ideals he encountered in East Germany also influenced his leadership style and political philosophy.

Raila Odinga’s entry into politics was not planned but was almost inevitable given his family background. After returning to Kenya, he worked as the Deputy Director of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) in the late 1970s. However, his deep interest in governance and democracy led him into political activism.

In 1982, Raila was accused of involvement in a failed coup attempt against President Daniel arap Moi. As a result, he was arrested and detained without trial for six years.

His imprisonment made him one of Kenya’s most notable political prisoners and cemented his reputation as a champion for democracy.

Upon his release, Raila remained active in Kenya’s pro-democracy movement, pushing for the return of multiparty democracy in the early 1990s.

In 1992, following the repeal of the one-party state system, Raila successfully vied for a parliamentary seat under FORD-Kenya, a party led by his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. This marked the beginning of his long and eventful political career.

Raila Odinga has contested for Kenya’s presidency five times but has never secured a win. His presidential bids have shaped Kenya’s political landscape, often stirring debates on democracy, electoral reforms, and governance.

In 1997, he ran for the presidency but finished third behind Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki. He later merged his party with Moi’s KANU, a move that surprised many of his supporters.

In 2007, Raila mounted his strongest campaign yet against Mwai Kibaki. The disputed election results led to post-election violence, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people and displacement of thousands.

To resolve the crisis, Raila was appointed Kenya’s second-ever Prime Minister (2008-2013) under a power-sharing agreement brokered by the international community.

In 2013, he ran against Uhuru Kenyatta, but lost amid allegations of electoral fraud. He challenged the results in court but was unsuccessful. In 2017, he contested again and lost to Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, he successfully challenged the results in the Supreme Court, leading to the annulment of the election a first in Africa’s history. He boycotted the repeat election, citing unfair conditions.

In 2022, he made his fifth attempt at the presidency, this time backed by outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta. He lost to William Ruto despite enjoying state support, marking another painful defeat in his political career.

Despite these setbacks, Raila remains a formidable figure in Kenyan politics, often regarded as the “father of opposition politics” due to his unwavering fight for democracy.

After years of national politics, Raila is now eyeing the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship, a position that will place him at the helm of the continent’s political and economic affairs.

The election is set for February 15-16, 2025, where he will require the support of a two-thirds majority from the 55 AU member states to win. If elected, he will be responsible for shaping policies affecting Africa’s economic development, peace, and security.

Raila’s leadership experience makes him a strong contender for the role. As an experienced politician, he understands the complexities of governance and has built strong diplomatic networks across Africa. His leadership will be critical in tackling pressing issues such as:

Strengthening Africa’s economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Enhancing peace and security by addressing conflicts in Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Sahel region.

Advocating for Africa’s representation in the United Nations Security Council. Pushing for stronger intra-Africa trade and infrastructure development.

Democracy and Electoral Reforms – He has spent his career advocating for free and fair elections. Pan-Africanism and Regional Integration Raila believes in a united Africa, free from external influence.

Infrastructure Development – As Prime Minister, he championed major projects like the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Football and Sports He is a renowned football enthusiast, a fan of Gor Mahia FC, and a skilled football commentator. History and Political Strategy – Raila is an avid historian, often referencing past political events in his speeches.

Electoral Fraud He has consistently challenged elections he deems unfair. Corruption He has been a vocal critic of mismanagement of public resources.

Dictatorship and Oppression – He has fought against authoritarian leadership since the Moi era, Tribal Politics He has sought to unite Kenya’s ethnic communities. Foreign Exploitation of Africa He has warned against Africa being used as a battleground for global superpowers.

From a detained activist to a five-time presidential candidate, Raila Odinga’s story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and ambition. Now, he is seeking continental leadership as the next AUC Chairperson.

If elected, he will have the responsibility of shaping Africa’s future in governance, economic growth, and diplomacy. However, the race will not be easy, as he faces stiff competition from other African leaders.

Will Raila finally clinch the African Union Commission Chairmanship, or will this be another near miss in his long political career? Only time will tell.
