Rescue Nzoia Sugar, farmers, Lusaka asks Ruto

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has called on President William Ruto to urgently address the financial challenges facing Nzoia Sugar Company, a key pillar of the region’s economy.

Speaking in Mumias during the launch of bonuses for sugarcane farmers, Governor Lusaka underscored the importance of reviving Nzoia Sugar to restore economic stability in the region.

He noted that farmers and workers affiliated with the company have endured prolonged delays in payment, leaving many in financial distress.

Lusaka appealed to the President to replicate the intervention taken at Mumias Sugar by organising bonuses for Nzoia farmers.

He emphasised that Nzoia Sugar, like Mumias, is a critical economic cornerstone for Western Kenya and its revival would significantly improve livelihoods.

“The people of Bungoma are counting on you, Mr. President, to find a lasting solution for Nzoia Sugar Company. This factory is the lifeline of thousands of farmers and workers who have gone for months without pay,” Lusaka said.

He argued that reviving the struggling sugar mill and ensuring timely payment of farmers and workers would not only rejuvenate the local economy but also secure the region’s political goodwill for the President.

“Once you sort out these two factories—Nzoia and Mumias—the people of this region will have no problem re-electing you,” Lusaka added.

President Ruto, currently on a week-long development tour of Western Kenya, is expected to visit Bungoma on Thursday and Friday to unveil several development projects.

Farmers and stakeholders are hopeful that the Nzoia Sugar crisis will feature prominently in his agenda.

Nzoia Sugar Company, a once-thriving enterprise, has faced financial mismanagement, debt, and operational challenges over the years, leaving thousands of farmers and workers in limbo.

Stakeholders believe immediate intervention, including financial support and structural reforms, is critical to reviving the mill and restoring its economic significance to the region.
