Tears, shock as Form Four candidate dies mysteriously in School

A Form Four candidate collapsed and died mysteriously while in school, an incident that has shocked and brought sadness to many.

In a bizarre incident that has left both the teachers and students of Friends Mugai Secondary School in Shirugu-Mugai Ward, Malava Constituency, angry parents and locals nearly invaded the school but were repulsed by police officers who were called in after the mob became unruly destroying the school gate.

It is unclear what led to the death of the student identified as Alvin Kulecho.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at Malava hospital on July 11, where he had been rushed after he collapsed in school.

It is alleged the student collapsed after he was slapped by a teacher, whose blood the locals were baying for.

The locals engaged the police in running battles with police being pelted with stones as the agitated mob sought to avenge the minor’s death.

They barricaded the road with stones and even overturned a tractor trailer to bar motorists from accessing the school.

The school principal Anne Lidigu Masheti who was on the forefront in assisting the boy, confirmed the incident of the boy collapsing and being carried by his fellow students to the school nurse who after examining him, referred him to Malava hospital.

“We were informed of the boy collapsing at the school and being carried by his friends to the school nurse section, where our nurse offered first aid but upon realizing that the boy was gasping for air and could not respond we decided to rush him to Malava together with the principal and some students who were with him and it was unfortunate that upon arriving at the facility,  it was confirmed that he had already passed away’ said area Chief Kayla Mufoya who was among the first people to arrive at the scene.

The principal thanked the students for staying calm and composed despite the protesters urging them to join in the fray and hope that investigations will reveal what really happened.

“We are waiting for the education office to come and give direction and some of our Board officials are here with us and we shall follow what the office will say definitely,” she said.

The subcounty police commander Paul Nkanatha also confirmed the incident and called for calm as they await for the post mortem report to establish the real cause of death.

“It is only through the autopsy report that we shall ascertain the cause of death but for now let us not speculate and let us control our emotions, we know it is hard for any parent to lose a loved one, lets all withhold our feelings until that time that the report will be released,” he urged.

Later in the day the subcounty education team led by the ministry of education director Rose Chisumi visited the school to calm the situation and address the students on the way forward.
