Malava MP faces hostile ground, falls out of favour

By Andanje Wakhungu.

Malava MP Malulu Injendi has lost favour with the electorate if the early 2027 General Election alignments is anything to go by.

He is set to be wrestled by Seth Panyako among a host of other hopefuls with more misery piling on him after voting yes on the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which has sparked massive uproar in the country.

Malava residents, commenting on social platforms, regret not giving Panyako a chance and for trusting an MP who has now betrayed them.

At a funeral in his home turf and three other locations within the constituency, Injendi received a cold, hostile reception filled with hatred and dejection.

His usual supporters feared welcoming him due to backlash from angry mobs who now view him as a traitor.

Speaking to the press, mourners expressed their disappointment with Injendi. When asked whom they would vote for in 2027 to replace him, they unanimously endorsed Seth Panyako, highlighting his role as the Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) and his firm stance against government oppression.

“We need a staunch leader who can stand firm and defend his people against government oppression. We will rally behind Panyako as our next leader come rain or shine,” one mourner said.

Another mourner expressed a wish for the election to be held next month, stating they would vote out Injendi with the vengeance he deserves, accusing him of prioritizing his family’s interests over those of his constituents.

For the first time, MP Malulu Injendi faced a hostile reception in his home ground while mourning the death of a close relative in Musingu sub-location, Chemuche ward.

Angry mourners jeered and booed him for voting yes on the Finance Bill, which they allege oppresses the common mwananchi. Injendi struggled to address the crowd, who interrupted him with rants and jeers, prompting his handlers to try to calm the situation.

The 11-year Malava MP attempted to tout his development record as his main argument for re-election in 2027.

He also discouraged young people from picketing, which had resulted in the deaths of three youths, and called on parents to restrain their children from street demonstrations.

However, his further efforts to explain his vote were rejected, with the crowd branding him a traitor and stating that he had signed his own exit letter as the next Malava MP.

Injendi had to leave abruptly as it became evident he was unwelcome at the funeral, with a section of the crowd chanting “finance bill.”

The MP has faced sharp criticism from all quarters following his support for the Finance Bill. Constituents have created a WhatsApp forum dubbed “Reject Malulu Movement,” where they are planning to occupy his homestead next Monday. One member of the forum wrote:

“Moses Malulu Injendi is an 11-year Malava MP who has been a total disappointment to his constituents. While other MPs like Nabii Nabwera have built storey buildings with complete tuition and administrative blocks using the National Constituency Development Fund, Malulu has only built double classrooms in our schools, issued bursaries of 2000 shillings to secondary and college students, and spent the rest of the money shedding crocodile tears at funerals in the constituency. He also pays 100 shillings each to a few desperate women who cheer him in the VIP tents. We are doomed politically.”
