Food security boost as Kakamega County supplies farmers with fertiliser, seeds
To increase food security in Kakamega, the county government has distributed farm inputs, including fertiliser and seeds, to respective picking centres ready for farmers to pick amid this long rain season.
Speaking to journalists in Kakamega town, Chief Officer for Agriculture and Irrigation Emmanuel Kariuki said the plan began early January and will make sure every farmer in Kakamega County has access to fertiliser and seeds.
Kariuki added that the county has, as of today distributed fertiliser to all picking centres in all 12 subcounties, where farmers will pick them in their wards.
“As the county, we have distributed fertilisers and seeds to all picking points in every subcounty, farmers will have the opportunity to collect bags of fertiliser from their respective wards,” Kariuki said.
According to Kariuki, the early distribution of fertiliser will make farmers utilise the long rains that may begin early next month.

He said as the county they are on the run to amplify food production and security among the locals who are unable to purchase from nearby agrovets.
The chief officer urged the farmers to move with speed so that they get the inputs that he said are highly nutritional with the capability of farmers producing high yields.
“I urge farmers to grab the inputs because they are certified and nutritional for them to get high yields,” he urged.
According to Kariuki, the distribution of farm inputs including fertiliser and seeds to farmers are the main agendas of Governor Fernandes Barasa.
He added that Governor Fernandes Barasa pledged to work tirelessly to promote farming, and he has managed to improve the lives of locals for three years since he was elected.
Chief Officer Kariuki pleaded with the locals to continue working with Governor Barasa for their betterment, saying that he will improve more for the remaining years in the office.
