Wetang’ula: Kenya’s Foreign Policy determined by the President

The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has reaffirmed that Kenya’s Foreign Policy is determined and administered solely by President William Ruto.

Speaking on Friday morning during a courtesy visit by Algerian Ambassador H.E. Mahi Boumediene, Speaker Wetang’ula urged government agencies to exercise caution in their diplomatic engagements to ensure alignment with established policies.

“Kenya’s foreign policy is determined, administered, and directed by the President and the National Government. No other person or agency can engage in foreign policy outside the framework set at the presidential level,” he said.

As Kenya reviews its foreign policy to align with global realities and leverage international connections for economic growth and improved livelihoods, Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of adherence to these guidelines to achieve national aspirations and objectives.

“Any other individual or position does not represent the official stance of the Republic of Kenya and its people,” he stressed.

During the meeting, the Speaker expressed gratitude to Algeria for honoring its commitment to support Kenya’s candidate, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, in the African Union Commission Chairmanship bid.

He noted that this support underscores the strong ties between the two nations.

The discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in technology, higher education, health, energy, and petroleum.

These talks built upon engagements initiated during Wetang’ula’s visit to Algiers last year.

“We appreciate Algeria’s support in providing scholarships for Kenyan students. Many Kenyans are pursuing studies in your country, and your generosity has significantly contributed to enhancing Kenya’s technological space through technology-based courses,” Wetang’ula stated.

As part of Parliament’s commitment to deepening parliamentary diplomacy, the Speaker extended an invitation to the President of the Algerian Parliament to explore further avenues for collaboration between the two nations.

Additionally, he reiterated his appreciation for Algeria’s support in Kenya’s African Union Commission Chairmanship bid, where former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was a candidate.

As Muslims worldwide prepare for the Holy Month of Ramadan, Wetang’ula extended his heartfelt wishes: “Ramadan is a period of reflection, prayer, generosity, and a manifestation of humanity in line with the Holy Quran and the teachings of Prophet Mohamed. I wish all Muslim brothers and sisters a peaceful Ramadan filled with prayer and hope for the future.”
