Kakamega First Lady urges review of bursary ban to support needy students

Kakamega County First Lady, Professor Janet Kassilly Barasa, has called on the Controller of Budget, Dr. Margaret Nyakango, to reconsider her directive seeking to bar governors from issuing bursaries to needy students.

Professor Kassily has expressed her dissatisfaction with the directive, arguing that governors are closer to the people and have a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable families.

Professor Kassily who was speaking today in Butere when she visited Dorcas Itinoti, one of the beneficiaries of her Helping Hand to Teen Mothers Programme, which gives a second chance to teen mothers to resume learning, further urged the national government to instead allocate more funds towards bursaries, emphasizing the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty.

Dorcas scored B- in last year’s KCSE, a performance that has since resuscitated positive communication in her family.
