Larry Chisiangani: Who is this boy rattling Kakamega politics?

A new generation of leadership is steadily knocking on the doors of power in Kakamega County as the clock ticks towards the 2027 General Election.

It is a new awakening and among the most visible faces of that shift is Larry Enos Chisiangani, a youthful politician whose senatorial ambitions are drawing attention across the region.

Chisiangani is crafting his campaign around a simple but resonant message that Kakamega needs fresh leadership that delivers results, not the everlasting rhetoric.

His rise reflects a broader political mood among voters, especially the youth, who are increasingly questioning long-standing political establishments and demanding accountability.

This mood was visible in the past by-elections where the electorate clearly indicated a shift with more youthful leaders emerging.

In Malava, for instance, there was Rhyan Injendi, Edgar Busiega, Leonard Shimaka, Bruce Shivakale and Wilberforce Tuvei making the list of young leaders rattling the status quo.

Chisiangani is linked to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), where he has positioned himself as part of the party’s youthful leadership wing.

This affiliation places him within Kenya’s current ruling political formation, but his messaging has largely focused on local politics touching on governance and service delivery rather than national political undertones.

He is strongly pushing for accountability in leadership while he challenges what he describes as “old politics” and calls for leaders who can actively question, oversee and deliver development to the people.

He has outlined a governance approach centred on oversight, transparency and equitable development and uptake of resources.

His approach suggests a leadership style that is less populist and more hands-on, with a strong emphasis on ensuring public resources are used effectively.

His vision aligns with a devolved system of governance that works for ordinary citizens, particularly those at the grassroots.

By emphasising fairness and equal opportunity, he is attempting to appeal to subtribes that feel marginalised or left out of county development programmes.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has been accused of neglecting some areas and denying them development yet Senator Bony Khalwale has not been seen as fighting for them.

One of Chisiangani’s strongest assets is his appeal to the younger voters.

His campaign easily resonates with a demographic that is increasingly influential in Kenya’s electoral politics since the GenZ uprising that forced President Ruto to fire his entire Cabinet.

He presents himself as a relatable figure who is energetic, accessible and in touch with everyday challenges.

His grassroots engagements, both physical and through digital platforms, have helped him build visibility and connect directly with constituents.

Recently, he received a warm reception in Mumias East constituency where he amazed the residents with his grasp of the area’s politics.

At the same time, he invoked his support for youthful leaders when he hailed the residents in voting for Peter Salasya as their MP even though he was a rookie and inexperienced politician in the last elections.

Supporters see him as a symbol of generational change, arguing that his leadership could inject new energy into Kakamega’s politics.

Kakamega County has long been dominated by seasoned political figures, including leaders such as Wycliffe Oparanya and Dr Khalwale who have shaped the region’s political landscape over the years.

Chisiangani’s candidacy, therefore, represents more than just a personal ambition as it is a direct challenge to entrenched political networks.

Despite his growing visibility, Chisiangani faces a significant challenge in converting enthusiasm into votes.

Kakamega’s political terrain is complex, often influenced by established alliances, ethnic dynamics and long-standing loyalties.

Whether he ultimately secures the seat or not, Larry Enos Chisiangani is emerging as a key figure to watch.
