Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has announced plans for the construction of a KSh 65 million ultra-modern maternity wing at Makhonge Health Centre in Kamukuywa, a move set to significantly enhance access to maternal and neonatal healthcare services in the area.

Governor Lusaka made the announcement while addressing mourners during the funeral service of the late Reuben Wabuke Kerre in Kamukuywa, underscoring his administrationโ€™s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare and reducing maternal and infant mortality.

โ€œWe are investing in a state-of-the-art maternity wing at Makhonge to bring quality maternal services closer to our people,โ€ Lusaka stated. โ€œNo mother should have to travel long, risky distances to access safe delivery services. This facility will be fully equipped to handle both routine deliveries and emergency obstetric procedures.โ€

The planned facility will include a dedicated labour ward, a fully furnished maternity theatre, a postnatal unit, and a child health outpatient section. According to the governor, the integrated design aims to ensure that both mothers and newborns receive holistic care under one roof.

In addition to the healthcare announcement, Lusaka reassured local traders that they would be prioritized once ongoing renovations at Kamukuywa Market are completed.

โ€œOur small-scale traders, particularly women and the youth, will be the first to benefit from the upgraded market facilities,โ€ said Lusaka. โ€œEconomic empowerment must go hand in hand with improved healthcare services.โ€

The maternity project is slated to commence soon and is part of a broader county initiative to upscale health infrastructure and improve service delivery across Bungoma County.
